Crafting more than stairs - we build centerpieces

We design and build bespoke staircases and railings for homeowners, architects, and builders across Chicagoland. Every project is one-of-a-kind — fabricated in our shop, installed by our own crew, finished to last decades.

Twenty years. 2500 stairs.

Since 2002, Custom Railz & Stairz has built custom staircases for residences across Chicagoland. Architects spec us for our hand-forged ironwork; homeowners come back for the second-floor master suite after living with our work on the main level. A staircase isn't a finish detail — it's the spine of a house. We build it that way.

Custom Design & Consultation

Every great staircase starts with a conversation. We work closely with you, your architect, or your builder to design a piece that fits your space perfectly. From selecting the right wood species to choosing the perfect baluster profile, we guide you through every detail.

Precision Fabrication & Installation

Our workshop blends old-world joinery with modern precision. We pre-assemble complex components in our facility to ensure a seamless installation in your home, minimizing disruption and ensuring a furniture-grade finish that lasts a lifetime.

Every project starts with a conversation. Send us your blueprints and photos through the contact form, and we'll schedule a call. Once we understand the kind of stair you're after and the materials you have in mind, we'll draft an initial proposal. If the range fits your budget, we'll schedule a site visit to take final measurements and move into design.

Non-radius stairs and railings typically run $8,000 to $15,000 per floor, depending on materials, finishes, and detail level. Curved stairs, helical builds, exotic species, and hand-forged ironwork are priced project-by-project — reach out and we'll walk through your specifics.

We work primarily in domestic hardwoods — red oak, white oak, maple, walnut, and hickory — and source specialty species on request. Many of our favorite projects combine materials: warm wood treads with blackened iron balusters, or glass panels framed in oak. The pairing is often where the stair finds its personality.

Once we've approved the layout and received your deposit, fabrication typically runs three weeks. Complex jobs or our busier seasons (late spring through fall) can push that to six or eight. We'll give you a firm schedule the moment we move into the build.

About three days per floor-to-floor run for most projects. Because we fabricate, finish, and dry-fit everything in our Chicagoland shop first, install is fast — we're moving completed pieces into place, not building from scratch in your home. You get a finished stair with minimal disruption.

Yes. We hand-stain and finish in-house, matching the color and sheen of your existing floors. Texture treatments — wire brushing, hand scraping, distressing — are available when the design calls for a more lived-in feel.

Often. We're set up to read architect's drawings, deliver shop drawings back, coordinate finish schedules, and bill through your design firm when preferred. Send us your project documents and we'll fold into your existing process.

Our shop is in the Chicago area, and most installations are within a two-hour drive. We've taken on projects further afield for the right architect or client — reach out and we'll talk through logistics.

We accept checks, ACH transfers, and all major credit cards — no transaction fees on card payments. Card payments are securely processed through Stripe.
